Overview

Self-hosted low-code platform for internal tools, dashboards, workflows, and AI-assisted apps.

ToolJet is a self-hosted low-code Retool alternative for building internal tools, CRUD apps, dashboards, and workflows against the data your team already runs.

The useful distinction is control versus convenience: ToolJet lets teams keep the application layer on their own infrastructure, while accepting responsibility for deployment, upgrades, authentication, backups, and capacity planning.

Why people choose ToolJet

ToolJet is aimed at product, operations, and developer teams that need a working internal app faster than a custom application but want more control than a hosted builder. Its official site describes both visual or plain-language app creation and an agent-driven development path.

The platform is broader than a form builder: it combines UI components, queries, events, permissions, connectors, and a built-in PostgreSQL-backed ToolJet Database.

What is included

Official product material highlights internal apps and dashboards, ToolJet Database, 100+ native connectors, REST and gRPC connections, role-based governance, SSO, audit logs, and AI-assisted generation. MCP support is aimed at coding-agent workflows, not a replacement for normal application security review.

Self-hosting is documented for Docker, Kubernetes, AWS, and other deployment paths. The exact edition and deployment method affect available enterprise features, so check the current license and documentation before planning a production rollout.

Requirements and tradeoffs

ToolJet’s current self-hosting requirements call for a 64-bit x86 Linux host, Ubuntu 22.04 or later for the documented VM path, 1 vCPU, 4 GB RAM, and at least 8 GiB of storage. The official requirements also call for PostgreSQL 16.x as the recommended database and Redis 7.x for caching and sessions.

The biggest caveat for a small homelab is dependency weight: PostgreSQL and Redis need their own capacity and backups, and ARM64 is not supported by the documented ToolJet images.

Best fit

Choose ToolJet when you need several internal apps, data-connected dashboards, or governed workflows and can operate a small application stack. Consider Appsmith, Budibase, or a custom app when their licensing, connector model, or simpler deployment better matches the workload.

Alternatives

  • Appsmith

    Another self-hosted internal-tool builder.

  • Budibase

Low-code platform with a different builder and deployment model.

  • Retool

Hosted and enterprise alternative when infrastructure ownership is not the priority.

Questions

What is ToolJet used for?

ToolJet is used to build internal tools, CRUD apps, dashboards, and workflows that connect to business data and APIs.

Is ToolJet a self-hosted Retool alternative?

Yes. ToolJet is a self-hosted low-code alternative for teams that want internal apps and data connections under their own deployment control.

What are ToolJet’s self-hosting requirements?

The current official requirements list 64-bit x86 Linux, Ubuntu 22.04 or later for the VM path, 1 vCPU, 4 GB RAM, and at least 8 GiB of storage. PostgreSQL 16.x is recommended and Redis 7.x is required for caching and sessions.

Does ToolJet support ARM64?

The official system-requirements page says the documented ToolJet images run on x86 64-bit and ARM64 is not supported.

Does ToolJet need PostgreSQL and Redis?

Yes for the documented self-hosted architecture: PostgreSQL is the recommended database and Redis is used for caching and session management.

Is ToolJet open source?

The ToolJet repository is public and licensed under AGPL-3.0, but check the current edition and feature licensing before deploying enterprise capabilities.

Who should use ToolJet instead of a custom app?

ToolJet fits teams that need data-connected internal apps quickly and can accept a platform dependency. A custom app may be better when the workflow needs unusual UX, deep domain logic, or minimal runtime dependencies.
